Fort Collins Metro and Neighborhood Information

Fort Collins, CO is known today as a college town with the Colorado State University students and staff contributing a great deal to both the job market as well as recreational activities. 'The Choice City' began as a military outpost for the U.S. Army in 1864 and has grown to be the fifth most populous city in Colorado and the county seat of Larimer County. The original fort site is now adjacent to the present historic 'Old Town' neighborhood.

Fort Collins received recent praise in 2006 from CNNMoney as the 'number one best place to live,' with a population of 128,000 and boasting a median home price of $212,000. For interested home buyers in Fort Collins, the appeal is the low cost of houses surrounded by a community full of activities to participate in and a 90.4 percent Air Quality Index. Some neighborhoods and suburbs include University Acres, South College Heights, Brown Farm, Imperial Estates and Golden Meadows.

Located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Fort Collins offers many outdoor recreational activities including whitewater rafting on the Cache La Poudre River, skiing in the Horsetooth Mountains, skiing at one of over 13 ski resorts, watching the animals at the Swetsville Zoo and visiting over 800 acres of parklands at over 44 different sites. Horsetooth Mountain Park is the Larimer County Park with 2,100 acres.

During the winter months, residents can choose from a number of indoor events, including taking in a semi-pro hockey game featuring the local Colorado Eagles. Two popular local museums are the Discovery Center Science Museum and the Fort Collins Museum, offering the opportunity to participate in hands-on exhibits. Fort Collins is also home to five award-winning craft breweries, the largest of which is the New Belgium Brewing Company. The other is the Odell Brewing Company which originated in the city and both participate in the Colorado Brewer's Festival held annually in late June.

Aside from the brewing industry, Fort Collins has a mix of business industries ranging from manufacturing to many small business ventures. Two large companies, Hewlett Packard and Anheuser-Busch are located here and contribute significantly to the job market; however, the largest Fort Collins employee base is Colorado State University.
