  Boise, ID Community Information

Boise Metro and Neighborhood Information

Known as the city of trees, Boise (pronounced boy-see by natives) received its name from French-Canadian trappers who first explored the area. They had been traveling through the desert plains when they saw an abundance of green trees, mostly cottonwoods, along the Boise River. They named the area Boise, meaning 'wooded.'

Boise continued to have a low population with the first fort established by a fur trading company called the Hudson's Bay Company until the onslaught of the Civil War re-established the Boise Fort at the intersection of the Oregon Trail, Idaho City and several mining towns. Boise soon became a large city and was so popular that it replaced the previous capital, Lewiston. Boise currently remains the capital of Idaho.

Today Boise is home to many different cultures and boasts a wide variety of entertaining activities. Every five years the Jaialdi festival is held celebrating the community's Basque population. Residents and tourists alike can also enjoy a night out on the town on Boise's popular 8th street downtown that is structured like European streets with many cafes and restaurants along the sides.

To continue to enjoy the excitement of the outdoors, the Boise River Green Belt is perfect for a long walk or jog after work. This trail follows the Boise River and is also accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Residents have their choice of entertainment from the Morrison-Knudsen Nature Center to the Zoo Boise. There is plenty of time to stay outside because the mountains to the north offer protection from wind and storms resulting in mild winters and hot dry summers.

Whether you purchase a Boise home or just enjoy a drive down the ever popular Warm Springs Avenue, catch a glimpse of the large, lavish homes lining the street. Another great street to live on is Harrison Boulevard, with its plethora of trees along the streets. The northwest end is abundant with affordable homes and popular with families wanting suburban charm and friendly neighbors. Within the past year, 73 Boise single family homes have been sold; putting the Boise average home price around $235,099, with most Boise homes for sale staying on the market for about 75 days, reported the Intermountain Multiple Listing Service, Inc.

For families thinking about relocation, Forbes announced Boise as the Fourth Best Place for Business in 2006. Your family can quickly adjust to their new surroundings by attending different Boise events. They can choose from watching the Boise State football team, which made it to the Fiesta Bowl in the 2006-07 season, seeing a movie or concert in the Egyptian Theater shaped like King Tut's tomb, or plan an outing at the 2009 Winter Special Olympics World Games hosted in Boise.
