Recent urban renewal efforts and extensive renovations have made Baltimore the crown jewel of the eastern seaboard. This independent Maryland city has remained a major U.S. seaport since the 1800s, back when it was the second leading port of entry for immigrants. As a result, Baltimore became the second city to have a population of 100,000, a feat surpassed only by New York.

Rooted as a marine community, Baltimore Harbor today is one of the most sheltered seaports, thanks to the nearby Delmarva Peninsula, which protects it from tropical storms and hurricanes. The Appalachian Mountains are another shield, blocking most of the cold winds. Baltimore's deep connection to the water is also evidenced in its top tourist destination, the National Aquarium and Inner Harbor. The National Aquarium in Baltimore opened in 1981 and houses more than 10,000 water specimens from nearly 600 different species, including dolphins, sting rays and even sharks. Baltimore has also embraced its competitive side, cheering on a wide range of sports teams, including the Baltimore Orioles (MLB), Ravens (NFL) and Bayhawks (Major League Lacrosse).

Waterfront property

The Inner Harbor, the most visited site in Baltimore, is both a historic seaport attraction and beloved city landmark. The Harbor itself is the northwestern stretch of the Patapsco River, centrally located amid charming historic districts, shopping and Oriole Park. In the Inner Harbor neighborhood of Canton, urban hipsters and older traditionalists comprise much of the community's population, making for an interestingly diverse mix. This high-end community offers views of the skyline and a wealth of Canton waterfront properties overlooking the magnificent harbor. Although this residential area is populated with brick row houses, older Canton single-family homes in need of renovation are also available, but expect to pay more.

For a more varied topography, Butchers Hill real estate offers Inner Harbor waterfront properties, but from the crown of Hampstead Hill. This historic district is also lined by continuous row houses.
