Today, the economy of Omaha is diverse. The Gallup Organization, TD Ameritrade, PayPal and LinkedIn all have major operations or headquarters in Omaha, which is also the home of six national fiber optic networks.

Tourism in Omaha has also helped fuel the city's economy greatly, with the annual College World Series providing important revenue and the city's Henry Doorly Zoo serving as the top attraction in Nebraska.

Socioeconomic diversity

No matter your taste in homes, in greater Omaha you'll find schools, shopping and recreation close by. Old Market attractions

As the business, social and cultural core of the city, downtown Omaha is generally thought of as a large neighborhood itself. The Old Market Historic District of the downtown area has been rehabilitated into boutique shops, offices and loft residential units. On downtown's south edge bordering Little Italy, the Burlington Station is one of the buildings in the Omaha Rail and Commerce Historic District that has been renovated into residential apartments.

North Downtown, or better known to locals as NoDo, is a big part of Omaha's future. Many locals and tourists now congregate in the Old Market, a former warehouse district a mile southeast of NoDo and now a vibrant blend of modern restaurants, shops and nightlife. Most agree that the 2003 opening of the nearby Qwest Center — a convention hall and arena big enough to attract acts such as The Police and Bruce Springsteen — was a major step toward bringing Omaha up in the pantheon of U.S. cities.
