Albuquerque, NM Community Information

Albuquerque Metro and Neighborhood Information

Lying on a plain along the banks of the Rio Grande River, Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico. Surrounded by the Chihuahuan Desert, this Southwest city represents a synergy of Native American, Hispanic and Anglo cultures where tradition and modernity coexist. Renowned for its low humidity and warm temperatures, Albuquerque has become a destination haven for visitors and residents alike. The University of New Mexico is centered in Albuquerque, and the Sandia National Laboratory brings science and technology to this city of the Old West. A number of indian reservations and pueblos exist in or near the city.

The arrival of the railroad in 1880, affected the development of specific sectors of the city and drastically altered its ethnic makeup. By 1885, Albuquerque had become predominantly Anglo in population. The consequent influx of residents from the East and the Midwest brought enormous changes to the prevailing architecture of the city and the region.

The Native American culture is probably the most deeply rooted of the many branches that make up the diverse ethnic and cultural environment of New Mexico. The Anasazi Indians were virtually the first identifiable inhabitants of the Southwest. They have bestowed a legacy of kivas, cliff dwellings and traditional arts and crafts. Today, a wide variety of Native American culture is available at the 19 Indian pueblos that lie within the boundaries of New Mexico. Indigenous arts and crafts are still widely practiced in New Mexico's pueblos.

Eclectic choice of real estate

Old Town, which is located near the center of the city, is a residential and commercial hub boasting a variety of shops and galleries. The Old Town Plaza has an eclectic mix of arts, crafts, gifts and wonderful food.

The Albuquerque/Santa Fe metro areas encompasses six major communities, making it the center of the state's commercial and government activities. These cities provide a collective range of economic development supported by an educated, growing workforce.

The state's diverse housing opportunities provide reasonable commuting times to the metro areas and are primarily newly built properties, especially on the west side of the river and in Rio Rancho.

The older, established neighborhoods have also retained their desirability and Southwestern charm, attracting many new families to the area. Albuquerque offers a nice blend of urban condominiums, suburban planned neighborhoods, lakefront estates and premier golf and resort communities. The median home price in this city is $250,000.
