Known as 'the biggest little city in the world,' Reno, NV is not only recognized for its legalized gambling but also its abundance of events and outdoor activities. What began as land developed by miners flocking to the region in the mid 1800s officially became a town when the first railroad was established years later. Reno was named after Major General Jesse L. Reno, a Union officer killed during the Civil War.
Reno is nestled on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in an area called the Truckee Meadows in the southern part of Washoe County. Within an hour of Reno, there are 18 alpine resorts and 12 cross-country ski areas. Some resorts include the Mount Rose Ski Area and Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe. Off the slopes there is ice-skating, sledding, snowshoeing and dog-sledding. In the warmer months of the year, biking, camping, hunting, fishing and mountain climbing are popular pastimes.
Reno is home to the oldest university in Nevada, The University of Nevada, Reno. This vibrant city is also the home to the annual Hot August Nights, a classic car convention and rally, Street Vibrations, a motorcycle gathering and rally, the Great Reno Balloon Race and Reno Air Races. Many large companies have also chosen to place their headquarters here including the International Game Technology Corporation, who manufactures slot machines used throughout the world, and the gaming corporation Harrah's Entertainment (which originated here). Reno also boasts an appreciation of the arts, with the Nevada Museum of Art which focuses on the 'growing interest in the protection of the land,' and the National Automobile Museum which showcases historic automobiles from the late 19th century up to the 1960s.
Reno's nightlife started out with a bang after the infiltration of many casinos and hotels. After the influx of building began to taper off due to the lack of tourists, many of these casinos and hotels have closed down to be converted into upscale condos. Some hotel/casinos that still remain are the Atlantis Hotel Casino, Harrah's Casino Hotel and Eldorado Hotel Casino. Many bars and nightclubs have also recently been springing up on the city's 'west end.'
According to the 2006 US Census, 210,255 people reside in Reno. The median price of houses in Reno has not fluctuated much since the Census' 2006 estimate of $350,700 to Yahoo Real Estate's estimate of $349,000 in October of 2007. Some neighborhoods and suburbs include Old Southwest, Lakeridge, PantheValley, Arrowcreek and Sparks.
Residents can enjoy all Reno has to offer during any month of the year. With so many natural resources at your fingertips and many entertaining events, begin your Reno real estate search today to find the right home for you!
