Combine award-winning cuisine with art and roses and you end up in Portland. Known as the City of Roses, Portland was recently awarded the 2007 honor as Delicious Destination of the Year by The Food Network and was also named the 10th Best Big City Arts Destination in the U.S. by American Style magazine. As the largest city between San Francisco and Seattle, Portland vies with those towns as the spiritual capital of the laid-back north Pacific Coast. But it does so in a way that mixes big-city dynamics with small-town friendliness. Portland has avoided the problems that come with growth, and although it is now experiencing rapid development, it has been able to keep its unique character.
The city is located in the Willamette Valley in Multnomah County and lies on a dormant volcanic field called Boring Lava Field. No longer spewing lava, the land now is best known for growing roses which appear all around the city. Portland is also home to the Trail Blazers NBA team and Mill Ends Park, which is the world's smallest park. The city also houses the Portland Twilight Criterium, an event featuring the area's fastest cyclists. Many residents gather to watch their friends and family compete in this popular pastime.
Hiking trails and microbreweries
Living in downtown Portland offers an easy walk to the Tom McCall Waterfront Park to enjoy the Waterfront Blues Festival and the Bite of Oregon Festival. Just west of downtown is Washington Park with its many hiking trails and the Oregon Zoo. North of downtown lie the northwest neighborhoods with street names arranged alphabetically. These unusual street names were the inspiration of characters in The Simpsons, including Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy and Mayor Quimby.
