  Dallas, TX Community Information

Dallas Metro and Neighborhood Information

Dallas's current slogan 'Live Large... Think Big,' aptly captures the city's entrepreneurial roots and penchant for reinvention. Dallas is part of the twelve-county Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area, extending 384.7 square miles. With its booming population, it is the ninth largest city in the country.

The 1930 discovery of oil near Dallas contributed to its standing as one of the nation's principal leaders in commerce, and its economic reputation was cemented with the influx of telecom companies, earning the appellation as Texas's Silicon Valley. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, the city's distinguished modern skyline and thriving downtown area was established, paving the silhouette for present day Dallas. Although the area is mostly flat and level, the city is flanked by Trinity River and White Rock Lake, a man-made freshwater lake sprawling 1,015 acres.

Dallasites are used to the humid subtropical climate, relishing instead in the city's distinction as having more shopping centers per capita than any other major city and having twice as many restaurants per capita than New York City. And although the five-time NFL Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys are no doubt at the center of the city's pride, locals also follow the seasons of the Dallas Mavericks (NBA), Dallas Stars (NHL) and Texas Rangers (MLB).

An architectural appeal

As the city continues to compete with the nation's major metropolitan areas economically, it is in a class of its own architecturally. The majority of Dallas architecture is modern and post-modern, but some residential areas and districts retain antiquated Victorian era and Tudor-style elements. Aside from its commercial prominence and architectural appeal, Dallas offers affordable housing as compared to the national real estate market.

From single family homes, high-rise apartment complexes and brand new luxury condominiums — a result of the 'urban renewal' phenomenon — the city offers a wealth of homes for any size family. The renewed attraction to downtown living has induced the conversion of brick warehouses into chic lofts and high-end condominiums featuring all the amenities imaginable. Renovated housing here starts in the mid $200,000s.

For a taste of what old Dallas would have looked like, the Turtle Creek district of Oaklawn in northern Dallas features Victorian homes and traditional two-story manors with sprawling acres and broad verandas. And amid a wealth of commercial development is a gem of Tudor cottages and apartments from the Roaring '20s in this neighborhood of oak-lined streets and artificial water brooks. Modest single family homes here start at $179,920, but many shell out five times that for their custom built palatial dwellings.

For the ultrawealthy, North Dallas's Preston Hollow community is synonymous for billionaire row, counting among its residents Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and former presidential candidate Ross Perot. This sanctuary of majestic estates offers a country setting with roomy acreage and miles of creeks, woods and hollows. Currently, houses range from $200,000 to the multimillions. Come reinvent yourself through the city's eyes and search for Dallas real estate today!
