Fort Worth, Texas, is known as the starting point for 'Where the West Begins,' a throwback to its roots as a cow town. As the fifth-most populated city in Texas, it spans about 300 square miles. The city is harbored by the Trinity River and bordered by bluffs and gently sloping hills that add to the local scenery. Fort Worth was established in 1849 as an army fort named after General William Jenkins Worth, a hero of the Mexican-American War.
The 1917 discovery of oil near Fort Worth would usher in a new era of a tamer Wild West town. The oil find contributed to a residential and economic boom that transformed Fort Worth into a contemporary metropolis.
Even as the city progressed toward modernization, its western roots continue to be one of its biggest tourist draws. For an ultimate view of the past, visitors flock to the Fort Worth Stockyards Historic District, where they can view the Chisholm Trail and bask in the Old West ambience. This area is packed with old-fashioned eateries, saloons, the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and other authentic venues. The District also offers Wild West re-enactments and is conveniently located just north of the downtown area.
