Salt Lake City Metro and Neighborhood Information

Though most commonly known as The Crossroads of the West for its geographic location, Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah, is widely known for hosting the 2002 Olympics and hosting parts of the Sundance Film Festival.

When Salt Lake City was first founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847, it became a quick target for mining booms and a stop on the First Transcontinental Railroad. The city is surrounded by the Great Salt Lake to the northwest, Wasatch Mountains on the eastern border and the Oquirrh Mountain Range on the western border, thus making it the perfect location for natural resources and a middle point between the western states.

These mountain ranges have also influenced the city and were a determining factor in the decision for Salt Lake City to host the 2002 Winter Olympics. These XIX Winter Games were held under the theme 'Light the Fire Within' and set two records: being the most populated area to have ever hosted the Winter Olympics and the other was the revival of the Skeleton race as a medal sport. The different venues used were Park City, Ogden and Provo in the mountains. Since the Olympics, these venues have been turned into popular tourist destinations for skiing, snowboarding and more.

Today, Salt Lake City is host to portions of the Sundance Film Festival in January, the largest independent cinema festival in the U.S. It is also home to the NBA's professional basketball team the Utah Jazz.

Citizens living in this famous city have many outdoor activities to engage in throughout the four seasons. With the abundance of outdoor natural landscapes, there are 126 individual parks expanding over 1,912 acres, including the Red Butte Garden with over 150 acres of gardens and the one-way Big Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway, only 14 miles long with stops at scenic picnic areas and campgrounds. Utah's Hogle Zoo has 1,100 animals and over 250 species from all around the world.

There are many neighborhoods to choose from when moving to Salt Lake City. These include the Marmalade District, Sugarhouse, The Avenues, Wasatch Range, The Upper Avenues, Federal Heights, East Bench and more. With one of the country's youngest populations of 178,858 in 2006 reported by the U.S. Census, this city is a popular choice to claim residency. Finding a reasonably priced house in Salt Lake City is not a challenge as Forbes.com reported the median home price at $233,100.

Residents can also enjoy ski slopes and resorts close to home in the surrounding mountains. The Trolley Square is an indoor/outdoor mall built out of renovated trolley barns with cobblestone streets featuring independent art boutiques, restaurants and retailers. For the local business person, headquartered here are Merrill Lynch Bank USA, Morgan Stanley Bank and the first ever Kentucky Fried Chicken.
