Milwaukee, WI Community Information

Milwaukee Metro and Neighborhood Information

Once known almost exclusively as a brewing and manufacturing powerhouse, Milwaukee today is undergoing a transformation into a world-class city. Over the past decade, new additions to the city have included the Milwaukee Riverwalk, the Midwest Airlines Center, Miller Park baseball stadium, an internationally renowned addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum and Pier Wisconsin, as well as major renovations to the Milwaukee Auditorium and U.S. Cellular Arena. In addition, many new skyscrapers, condos, lofts and apartments have been constructed in neighborhoods on and near the lakefront and riverbanks.

Beerline B and Brady Street

The Beerline B neighborhood is an area of primarily condo development along the north side of the Milwaukee River, which has been developed after the removal of the Beerline B railroad spur that once provided service to Pabst, Blatz and Schlitz breweries. The neighborhood is centered around Commerce Street, which was originally intended to be a canal to the Rock River owned by Byron Kilbourn. Today, the neighborhood is home to Lakefront Brewery, Inc.

Brady Street is a neighborhood filled with coffee houses, nightclubs, restaurants, vintage clothing boutiques and thrift stores. Once the core of Milwaukee's hippie counterculture, gentrification forced most of its Bohemian population out, many going to Riverwest and Bay View. But this neighborhood still exhibits a strong independent flair.

East Town

East Town is the portion of Milwaukee's central business district east of the Milwaukee River. It is bordered by Brady Street on the lower east side, the Third Ward on the south, and Lake Michigan on the east.

East Town has dense, narrower streets and a more intimate feel, whereas Westown has broad, vast streets with older buildings. The strikingly modern skyscrapers of the Northwestern Mutual Life complex and Milwaukee's tallest building, the U.S. Bank Center, as well as the city's four other tallest buildings, dominate the eastern portion of the neighborhood.

Other noteworthy buildings include the Chase Bank building, the Faison building, and the Morgan Stanley building. Also, two large condominium developments, Kilbourn Tower and University Club tower, have been recently completed in the northern half of the neighborhood. Both buildings are over 32-stories-tall and have multimillion dollar penthouse units. The neighborhood also contains the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and Old St. Mary's Church, both of are landmarks of Milwaukee's early days. The East Town neighborhood association hosts Jazz in the Park, an outdoor music concert series at Cathedral Square Park.

The median home price in Milwaukee is $220,000. The city delivers Midwest hospitality with the best of urban living — from great shops and restaurants to outdoor festivals, most notably Summerfest, the world's largest music festival. So start your Milwaukee real estate search today!
