Checklist - 2 Weeks Before Moving Day
Now that moving day is only two weeks away, you should be seeing the payoff from your hard work of the past few weeks. Focus now on the final details of your move:
• Finalize all of your packing decisions. If you will be doing some or all of the packing yourself, make sure that you have purchased and received all of the moving boxes and packing supplies that you need.
• Create a staging area where you can pack and label boxes.
• Clean out those less frequently used spaces and tough-to-clean areas such as basements, attics, closets and crawl spaces. You're likely to discover additional items that you may need to throw away or pack for your move.
• Dispose of any hazardous materials or items such as paint, oil and weed killers. Discard any propane tanks from your grill. Remove all the oil and gasoline in your lawn mower, snow blower and other power tools.
• If you're going to take any nontoxic and nonflammable cleaning fluids with you, tape and seal those items in plastic bags.
• Clear out your safety deposit box at your local bank.
• To ensure uninterrupted prescription coverage, call a preferred pharmacy in your new city and have your prescriptions transferred there.
• Disassemble your computer and peripherals and back up your computer files on a CD-ROM or flash memory drive. Take these files with you when you travel to your new home. Remember, exposure to extreme temperatures can damage your software and files.
• If you will be traveling by car during your move, have your car serviced, including changing the oil and filter and checking the fluid levels and tire pressure.
• Return any items you have borrowed from your friends or neighbors. You don't want to take something across the country and then have to ship it back to its owner.
