Determining Moving Company Green Cred

Print

Lots of companies like to say they're environmentally friendly, and the moving industry is no different.

But how do you know that your movers really have green 'cred'?

Here are some things to look for -- and ask about -- if you want to make sure your move has a less detrimental effect on the environment.

  • Does the moving company offer reusable packing crates? Moving companies generally prefer that customers use new cardboard boxes to ensure stability, which means a lot of cardboard boxes get tossed after only one use.

Reusable crates eliminate that waste. They're plastic, but you get a lot of use out of them before they need to be discarded, more so than cardboard boxes. If the moving company doesn't offer them or you're packing yourself, look for companies that offer this service. They generally drop off the crates before you move and pick them up when the move is done. Many of these firms are sprouting up -- just do a simple Internet search to find them in your area.

  • If you go with a moving company that uses cardboard moving boxes, ask them what they do with the boxes when they're finished with your move. If you're moving on your own, some companies let you return unused boxes to be used by other moving consumers.
  • If your moving company is doing the packing, ask about the actual packing materials they use. Some buffering materials like bubble wrap and foam can be made from cornstarch and recycled paper sludge. Also, tell them you'd prefer to use less than more, but the moving companies also want to be sure they use enough material to protect your goods, so be aware of the balance.
  • What kinds of trucks does the moving company use? More trucks are using bio-diesel now, which are more environmentally friendly than the usual diesel-chugging beasts you see on the road.

All in all, you might pay more for a move that's environmentally friendly, but you'll have a cleaner conscience.
