The history of a neighborhood can be great source of curiosity for buyers and pride of its current residents. Among the most
interesting neighborhoods are those that contain both a piece of history and valuable real estate: a home owned by a United States President. In honor of President’s Day, below is a list of houses that some of America’s most influential leaders (and their number one ladies) helped turned into a home. (Hint: none of these houses are 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue).
Beginning With the First U.S. President (1732 Popes Creek Road Colonial Beach, VA 22443): The United States has changed quite a bit since George Washington was President, but just as the U.S. stands strong, so does the birthplace of the country’s first President. The farm in Virginia that Washington called his home is now a National Monument and the resting place for five generations of the Washington family (not George though).
A Rotation of Powerful Neighbors (1651-1653 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC): The Blair House on Pennsylvania Avenue was built in 1824 and has been serving the United States since 1942 as the official guesthouse where the President hosts foreign heads of states. However, it briefly served as President Harry S. Truman’s residence during 1948 to 1952 when the White House was under construction.
Home of America’s Cowboy (Rancho del Cielo “Sky’s Ranch”, Santa Barbara, California): President Ronald Reagan, the former onscreen cowboy, fell in love at first sight with the 688 acre ranch that sat atop the San Ynez Mountain Range, which he aptly named “Sky’s Ranch” or “Heaven’s Ranch”. Those fortunate enough to live on a ranch in this area can enjoy the same sense of serenity that President Reagan so fondly embraced on his very own piece of heaven.
A High Security Neighborhood (5046 S Greenwood Avenue Chicago, IL 60615): President Obama and his family moved into this Georgian Revival house in Chicago before their move to the White House. Their move into the neighborhood brought considerable traffic from curious visitors and paparazzi, but it also brought with it a handful of of advantages. According to George and Lara Moynihan who live next door to the Obama house, the high levels of security around the President’s house are a positive in their book. Plus, since their neighbor happens to live in the White House, they have the most quiet neighbors on the block.
