EPA honors D.C. as Green Power Community

More environmentally conscious homebuyers may decide to purchase homes for sale in Washington, D.C., as the district was honored by the EPA as the nation's leading Green Power Community.

The group awarded the District of Columbia as the most eco-friendly market in the U.S. due to its high use of green power sources in businesses and homes.

"The District of Columbia is setting an excellent example for the nation by harnessing clean energy," Elizabeth Craig, acting director of EPA's Office of Atmospheric Programs, said in a statement. "We hope the city will continue to increase its use of green power and that other communities will follow suit."

Washington Mayor Vincent Gray stated that clean power resources are something he wants to expand in D.C. over the coming years, adding that green energy can help the region's economy thrive.

Reportedly, at least 8 percent of the nation's capital's electricity comes from green energy sources. However, by the end of 2011, district officials stated they want to increase this figure to 10 percent.
