In a new approach to take on potential issues with sewage and waterlines, the City of Atlanta and a home warranty company have partnered up to help homeowners insure against potential damage and repair costs, reports say.
Currently, if there is a line break between the meter and a house, it's on the homeowner to pay for repairs. In many cases, homeowner's insurance doesn't cover the costs, leaving them with thousands of dollars in repair bills.
"The City of Atlanta is not responsible for it," Atlanta City Councilwoman Felicia Moore told WXIA-TV. "From your home to the meter is your private property, and it's your private responsibility to pay for the repairs."
Atlanta has teamed up with the home warranty company to offer some relief. The new insurance program offered will cost $4.50 a month for the water line and $4.50 a month for the sewer line. Repairs up to $4,000 will be covered under the program.
So far, more than 1,000 homeowners in Atlanta have signed up for the new warranty program.
This new state-sponsored program could create incentive to spur movement in Atlanta homes for sale. The low cost alternative could potentially save area homeowners thousands if the unexpected occurs.
